We have all seen really bad website design. They are those sites that are slow to load, difficult to navigate, or just a hodgepodge and a mess. If we have said it once, we have said it a million times, “You never get a second chance for a first impression.” For many of your potential customers, your website is their impression of you and your business. A website design can attract or repel potential customers. Therefore, we are sharing our essential rules of great website design.
The 6 Essential Rules of Great Website Design
Rule 1: Keep It Simple – Take a look at the top trafficked global websites. They include sites like Google, YouTube, and Facebook. What does each of these sites have in common? They are sophisticated and powerful but are not overwhelming to visitors. Avoid designs that are cluttered or confusing.
Rule 2: Be Visually Understood – The most powerful piece of real estate on your website is the “above the fold” section. This is the first area seen on the screen with the site loads. In that section, one should convey a visually understood message about your company, product or service without the visitor reading a single word.
Rule 3: Easy Navigation – A visitor needs to be able to find the information they are looking for within 2 or 3 clicks. Evaluate your website’s layout. The further information is from your homepage, the harder it is for your visitors (and even search engines) to find it.
Rule 4: Use One Click Contact – Give your visitors the option to click a “mailto” link to contact you. Many people do not want to fill out a form to ask a question or provide feedback. Moreover, many companies ask for information that some people just don’t want to give. Keep things simple and let visitors email you.
Rule 5: Be Consistent – Many businesses develop their websites over time. They start with a basic site, then add areas like a blog, online shopping, support forum, and so on. These additions often lack design consistency with different colors, font sizes, navigation, images and other elements. A consistent website is a professional website.
Rule 6: Go Mobile – Having a site that is friendly to mobile devices is no longer an option. A responsive website design will automatically adjust its appearance to be easily viewable on smartphones and tablets. A person should be able to access your site at any time or place.
